The concept of xigga was born into existence through a late-night recording session of a project called Colored Girls Hustle. While remixing a popular hip-hop song into an affirmative afro-futuristic mantra, we started using the word xigga. What started as a quirky reimagining of the “n” word, soon became an entire philosophy unto itself. The “x” in xigga started to take on a life of its own. Originally inspired by Malcolm X, the “x” represents a reclaiming of our names, a retelling of our story: past, present, and future. Xigga celebrates how we exist at the margins and the center at the same time, and the power we have to conjure our own freedom.
As the concept of xigga began to marinate, my own creative journey with it started to emerge. I would wake up and words would just pour out of me. These words found themselves in a collection of poems called the xigga manifestas. which evolved into a DIY zine. Mantras from the zine turned into stickers and buttons and t-shirts, and eventually into mini xigga care packages. xigga felt like a gift that I needed to share with my community of artists, activists, healers, and visionaries. I started hosting xigga dinners, a space for folks to share stories, read the manifestas, and connect to our xigga energy. xigga has since come alive through poetry, paintings, story circles, cyphers, youth workshops, public art installations, and finally the Dream Awake Coloring Book! xigga has grown into a movement of powerful connection, visionary community, and creative healing.
Inspired by xigga, The Dream Awake Coloring Book contains over 30, 4 x 4.75 inch perforated colorcards of doodles and word-art bound by a thick spiral wire. Weighing less than 6 ounces, the book is lightweight and can be used in a variety of ways. Past purchasers have used the book as:
a daily coloring meditation.
gifts for friends and family.
As placeholders on altars or sacred spaces
As framed art to display at home or in a workspace.
Several organizations have used the colorcards from the Dream Awake Coloring Book at their community events; setting up a coloring table for adults and children, or incorporating them into workshops, or self-care stations. The colorcards are a beautiful source of affirmation and mindfulness. The Dream Awake Coloring book is a tool for tapping into our xigga energy: honoring all the magic that we make and all the magic that we be.
